U&M has been making important advances having a direct influence on its improvement and concern with occupational safety and harmony with the environment and the community.

An important step was the implementation of the Management Excellence System – MES – which generated many benefits, among which are the integrated certification: ISO 140001 (environmental management); OHSAS 18001(occupational health and safety management) and ISO 9001 (quality management) registered since 2004.

The participation of the operational staff in the company's improvements has become even greater after the implementation of the Quality Control Circle – QCC. Organized in groups, the employees propose solutions for the various problems they identify.

The results of these enhancements were seen when the company was listed among the 150 best places to work, by the Guia Exame/Você S.A. magazines and when it was recognized with the Prêmio Mineiro de Qualidade (Minas Gerais’ Quality Award) in 2006 and 2007, as well as being listed among the top 100 companies to work for in Época magazine in 2007.


U&M is on the right track and is now in search of new challenges to improve the quality of life of life of all those who play a role in its history.

  • Preparation to be accredited with the integrated certifications.
  • U&M and EPSA merge.


2004

  • ISO 9001:2000 certification.
  • Implementation of the Annual Goals Plan (AGP).
  • First customer satisfaction survey is carried out.
  • Implementation of the Career and Salary Plan and of the Health Plan.


2003

  • U&M becomes capable of operating in large mines.
  • Implementation of a Strategic Plan for the company.

2002

  • The company acquires extra heavy machinery with over 150 ton capacity.
  • The Management Excellence System – MES – is first set up and becomes part of U&M's daily routine.


2001

  • U&M changes its trade name to U&M Mineração e Construção S/A (U&M Mining and Construction Co.). The color of its logo becomes green in order to show in its visual identity the company’s concern with environmental issues.


2000

  • U&M joins the league of the largest mining companies with the purchase of its first heavy equipment.• The Company is now ready for new markets and carries out a benchmarking in Australia: U&M pays a visit to 14 mines and to the four largest mining operations in the country.


1996

  • U&M’s earnings are divided by its directors and managers through the implementation of the Participative Management policy.


1994

  • U&M is contracted by the Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, returning to work in the north of Brazil on the enbankment of the Barragem do Gelado (a dam).

1993

  • After a long partnership and their consolidation in the domestic market, Módulo and Unienge merge, resulting in a new endeavor: U&M Construção Pesada LTDA. (U&M Heavy Construction Ltd.), under the management of Renato and Marcelo Ribeiro.
  • U&M’s first contract to operate in mines. Services were carried out for the Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil S/A (INB) in Poços de Caldas, state of Minas Gerais.


1985

  • After his experience as Módulo’s chairman, economist Renato Ribeiro Machado, Gumercindo, Machado’s son, founds Unienge Comercial e Construtora LTDA (Unienge Construction and Business Ltd.) in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais.
  • Unienge signs the first contract in northern Brazil and opens ditches to build dams for da Comipa (Companhia de Mineração do Sul do Pará – South Para´s Mining Company) in São Félix do Xingu.


1977

  • Módulo Terraplanagem e Construções LTDA is founded in Juiz de Fora by engineer Gumercindo Barroso Machado and his wife, Berenice Ribeiro Machado.
