Safety norms are required by law. However, at U&M the actions go beyond the minimum requirements resulting in record working hours without accidents.
Some of the safety practices at U&M are:
• HSD (Health and Safety Dialog) – The HSD is practiced daily and evaluates the previous day’s positive and negative aspects. The employees have the chance to comment on incorrect attitudes and improve discipline to favor safety, such as valuing the use of PPEs (Personal Protection Equipment). The HSD is also a moment to prepare physically and mentally for a new work shift.
• PRA (Preliminary Risk Analysis) – Most occupational hazards are linked to the jobs people do. Therefore, the PRA charts those possibilities so that each and every one of them is prevented from happening.
• Safety Report – Every unsafe action is recorded in a report and sent to the person who was careless. By recognizing his/her faults, the employee sees which actions must be performed and avoids recurrence of unsafe actions.
• Safety Inspections – Machinery, tools, equipment and facilities are periodically inspected. Some are verified daily, others weekly or monthly. The time between inspections is defined according to inspection needs. It is important not to permit wear and tear which can lead to danger.
• MCOHP (Medical Control of Occupational Health Program) – Employees’ health is protected with the practice of preventive medicine. Every employee is examined periodically so as to ensure that the situations and elements they are exposed to at work do not cause any harm to their health.
• Safety Signals – Signals, posters, floor markings and other forms of signaling can be seen everywhere in the company.
• ROPS (Roll Over Protection System) and FOPS (Fall Over Protection System) – Every piece of equipment acquired by U&M has devices to protect against rollovers and fallovers.
• ICAP (Internal Committee on Accident Prevention) –Committee which deals with issues related to safety.
• Emergency Aid Assistance – In spite of the measures to prevent accidents, U&M has an emergency aid service. It also has an Emergency Brigade: a group of employees trained in first aid and CPR.
• Accident Investigation Analysis – Causes are investigated when there is an extreme situation resulting in an accident. Only when the full report is written is it possible to prevent it from happening again.
• Safety Statistics – The visualization of results of the safety system is arrived at by counting the time without accidents in each operation. Figures are contrasted so that they become the basis for new strategies of preventive actions to be drawn up.
